Torstar ceasing publication of three Toronto community newspapers

Torstar ceasing publication of three Toronto community newspapers

le
20 avril 2020

Beach-East York, Bloor West-Parkdale, York-City Centre editions end today.

Like many businesses, the unprecedented economic fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic has hit the newspaper industry extremely hard.

Advertising revenues, which have been steadily declining for a number of years, have fallen even further in recent weeks.

Because of that, we have been forced to make the difficult decision to permanently cease publication, effective immediately, of three of our print editions serving Toronto — Beach-East York Neighbourhood Voice; Bloor West-Parkdale Neighbourhood Voice; and York-City Centre Neighbourhood Voice.

While the federal government is providing some financial assistance to media organizations, the reality is that our business has been under tremendous pressure for several years and remains so. Over those years we have taken many steps to reduce our operating costs while striving to maintain regular publication of these newspapers. But the current economic crisis has resulted in the printed editions being no longer economically viable.

While we will cease publishing these printed newspapers, we remain committed to delivering news and information about their communities.

Indeed, we are still hard at work researching and reporting the news.
